Silverlake Community Church is a community of people committed to living out our beliefs, dreams, and faith in Jesus Christ. We are not simply about words, promises or rules. We are about experiencing the transforming power of Jesus Christ in our lives and relationships. In an urban area where people are often anonymous, Silverlake Community Church is a place where you can know and be known while moving forward in your spiritual journey.
Treasuring Christmas
“...Mary treasured up all of these things
and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
The holiday season can be a frenetic time of year. This time of celebration can be lost in all of the things we need to do. Unfortunately, church can sometimes add to the busyness with all sorts of special Christmas programs. At Silverlake Community Church we are offering opportunities to stop “doing” and focus on “being.” Our worship during this season will offer us times to step out of our busyness and reflect on our lives.
We often think of Christmas as a time of reflecting on a past event. And it certainly does includes remembering the birth of Jesus Christ. Advent means “coming,” the coming of Christ. But the coming of Christ is not only something that happened in the past. It is also something that will happen again in the future. Christmas, then, is a time to look at our lives in the present; a time between the past and the future.
Christmas is a time to take stock of our response to Jesus Christ. Have we been living our lives in a way which recognizes the love of God, expressed in the coming of the Christ child? Are we living our lives in anticipation of the justice of God, which will come in its fulness upon Christ’s return? These are critical questions. We need time to find time to reflect upon them.
We will have two Christmas Eve services, at 6:30 pm and 11:15 pm. And on Christmas Day we will have a shortened, less formal service from 10:30 to 11:15 am. Together these services will help you find the time to consider these questions.
Let’s treasure Christmas together this season!
O Little Town of Bethlehem
How still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.
